Lødingen is situated at the confluence of three major fjords, historically rendering the locality a focal node for transport and communications. The settlement expanded around the regional telegraph exchange, the pilot station, and the steamship quay served by the Coastal express (Hurtigruta). Due to the German naval bases, the advanced submarine operational base and headquarters at Skjomen and Bogen, and the importance of Narvik, Lødingen rapidly became a vital node for the control of shipping movements and adversary activity, concurrently hosting multiple headquarters for logistics, air defence, and coastal artillery across the wider region.
This military function persisted post-war, initially as the headquarters for Narvik fortress, the regional naval district, and as the garrison town for Nes fortress, deeply integrating the armed forces into the daily life and identity of Lødingen.
